There’s been a lot of talk lately about how bad it can be for one to sit for hours at a time, day after day after day. Just ask Google. I know that for a lot of folks, this just isn’t an issue, but for me, it is. I’m a software developer by trade, which means that many days, aside from potty breaks and lunch breaks, I sometimes sit for 8 or 9 hours straight. I’m quite confident that this has been a contributing factor not only to my IBD, but also to my low energy levels, difficulty waking in the morning, and all kinds of other issues. So it was with this in mind that I went to my boss recently and asked him to pay for a standing desk. He agreed.

I work for a very small company, and when I started doing some research on how much pre-fab standing desks can cost, I couldn’t bring myself to ask the company to pony up $700 or more for something that I may or may not be able to stick with over the long term. I’d rather he spend that money on more important stuff. But I also knew that just stacking some boxes on top of my existing desk would drive me nuts. I wanted something that looked good, and was sturdy. Again, Google came to the rescue, and directed me to the website, IKEAHackers. Wow! I’ll never look at IKEA furniture the same way again!! It’s amazing some of the clever and beautiful things people have come up with using only IKEA parts.

But I digress.

Not surprisingly, there are a variety of different solutions presented for creating a standing desk. I went through most of them, chose this one: Ikea standing Desk [Thibaut Colar’s Home]. I made a couple of slight modifications. Most notably, I used a different sized table top, as I wanted more depth on top and more legroom below. I’m super pleased with the results!

I consider this an investment not just in my fitness, but also in my general wellness. I believe that this will help me sleep better, address some of my nagging back issues, and possibly even help control systemic inflammation.

What are some changes you’ve made to your workspace to enhance your health? Anybody else with standing desks? How about treadmill desks? Or maybe you just have some healthful habits you commit to?
